AbstractSaponified starch-g-polyacrylonitrile was synthesized via a redox initiation mechanism with Mn(III)as the initiator and by alkaline hydrolysis of the nitrile groups with KOH. Prior to the grafting reaction, cassava starch was gelatinized at 80 C. The water absorption properties of the newly developed graft copolymer were determined. Previously, starch-g-polyacrylonitrile was synthesized with cassava starch gelatinized at 65 C. The new experimental data make it therefore possible to do a comparative analysis between these two high water-absorbing copolymers. -- The results indicate that at a gelatinization temperature of 80 C, The resulting saponified starch-g-polyacrylonitrile has better absorption properties than the one synthesized with the starch gelatinized at 65 degree C.
